Dbox??? (englisch version)

Beitrag von tenorism »

Hello
I am trying the last couple of days to understand what Dbox is but the only thing I find is details in German.
I wish I knew some.
Can anyone here explain in English with a few words what that box does and if there is a similarity to Dreambox.
Or better if someone has a link in English would be good.

"dbox" is a term coined by the Kirch Group for their digital television receivers.

The original dbox was put on the market around 1996 coinciding with the advent of the German digital television, back then represented by the commercial "DF1", later "Premiere". Since DF1 was a pay-tv broadcaster some kind of conditional access system was needed.

Also, to be in control of the market it was decided to allow only one kind of boxes for reception of DF1/Premiere, the "dbox" with its special built-in Irdeto-CAM. Actually the "dbox" was a regular Nokia satellite receiver (MM9500) simply relabelled. Since it was sponsored by DF1 it was sold cheaper than in the other european countries which of course led to a lot of "grey exports".

To prevent this the original Irdeto-CAM was changed to the BetaResearch version so it would no longer work with original Irdeto smartcards but only with the BetaResearch cards.

Around 1999 the Kirch Group decided a new digital receiver was needed so they ordered Beta Research to design a hardware specification which was to be put in real hardware by manufacturers Nokia, Sagem and Philips. This new dbox was also called "dbox" officially (in fact the naming "dbox2" was strongly discouraged to not make people think the original dbox was outdated) but to make a distinction the term "network" or "advanced" was added.

Since the Kirch Group/BetaResearch was the ordering party these boxes were never officially sold in the shops on their own but only in connection with a "Premiere"-subscription.

After in 2002 the Kirch Group was having severe financial troubles it was decided to get rid of the proprietary boxes so alternative receivers were allowed and encouraged.

Comparing the hardware both receivers are very different but for both of them alternative firmwares have emerged. There is the assembler-based "DVB2000" for the dbox1 (no longer developped) and the linux-based "tuxbox"-distribution by ways of a so-called CDK (cross-development kit) for which this forum is offering support.

Since some of the dreambox developers were originally part of the tuxbox-project they made the drivers mostly compatible with the tuxbox development environment, so it's possible to build the GUI applications for both dreambox and dbox2 from the CDK.

On the hardware side they are very much different, so the tuxbox drivers cannot be used but only the closed DM-drivers.
