There are 3rd party plugins and wget sources available to grab epg data but not readable by enigma epg.

I guess I would need to parse external epg data to Enigma format OR modify enigma epg to read external data?

Please could anyone explain the enigma epg.dat format or how the cache works?

Have a look at apps/tuxbox/enigma/lib/dvb/epgcache.cpp .
There are two methods load() and save() to handle the epg.dat file.
