DBox for Dummies

Hi there, I'm hoping someone out there could help an English speaking friend out. I recently bought a Philips DBox 2 with Linux from E-Bay and it was working fine - lots of channels - but just recently, the picture kept on freezing up and when I reset the box, it shows the LINUX logo on the front of the box and says "Booting system LINUX PPC 1.1.6", but it doesn't go any further.

Can anyone help me out? I think I may need to start new, but I don't know what to do. When I bought the box, they said it was already in Debug mode. I am really a beginner with this and I could use someone to take me step by step if they could. What do I need as far as cables and software?

Hi, i ell try:
Cables you need:
Network Crossover Cable
Zeromodem Cable (its a 9pol. SubD crossed Cable)
Howtos:
http://www.dietmar-h.net (some are in English available)
Software:
D-Box Bootmanager from: http://dbox.feldtech.com/
What to do:
Install D-Box Bootmanager
Connect D-Box with the two Cables to PC
Use the Howtos from Dietmar to read out the Flash etc.
If there any Problems ask again
(Did you get any software with the Box? You will need some special files from the Original Software of your Box.)

I did not get any software with the box. Is this something that I can download on-line?

When I first got the box, a friend of a friend took it over to his house and said he put a whole new image on it to get some "extra" channels. He said that he had to start from the beginning and add everything new. Does this sound right and if so, where can I get these "images".

Which Channels do you mean?
An legal Image supports only Free to Air Channels and with Betacrypt coded channels. These Images are downloadable at:
http://dboxupdate.berlios.de/
If you are looking at anything else, you won et get support in this forum.
Your Friend should give you the files from the Box called U-Codes, without them you can et install a image from berlios.

Thanks!! I'll get with him on this. I don't know what you mean by illegal channels, but I know that before I recieved only German channels. Now ( before it died ) I received all sorts of channels ( french, dutch, english, german ) and they had subtitles in english. Is this illegal??

One of the reasons that I went to the board for help is that that guy is never home, he is always on tour. I thought that if I could get some direction from here, I could do it myself.

Any other ideas as to where I could get this file?

Of course not. It is illegal to look pay-tv without paying

Don et be angry, but I think you don et have a chance to understand how to handle a D-BoxII if you start with a defect one. Maybe there is only a little problem with it, but if there is something wrong with the hardware you get crazy and you won et be sucessfull. The Howtos are all written for running boxes.........

I have ordered a nullmodem cable and a crossover cabel and I will try somethings from there.

What exactly is an "Image" does this mean what channels I get or is this a type of software that makes the DBox run.

An Image is the bittrue Mirror of the flash chips of your box. This includes the OS comparable with windows of PC. Also included is software like neutrino etc. Which channels you can get, depends not on the used Image. Every Os (Betanova and Linux) should find all available channels of the used satellit.
