Samba CIFS and SMBFS

I cant connect to my dreambox (Samba) share with DBox2 and CIFS (latest CVS). I can connect to it with Windows so it must be working. In the past I have been able to connect using DBox2 and SMBFS so my questions are these:

1) Why wont CIFS on DBOX2 connect to a standard Linux Samba share on Dreambox (latest CVS) ?

2) Given that CIFS is newer, is it not backward compatible with SMBFS ?

3) If I really do need to use SMBFS, how can I compile SMBFS support into a DBOx2 CVS image ?
